  • Startups should think about becoming camels rather than unicorns

Consolidated as the virtual meeting that brings together entrepreneurs, innovators, banking and insurance executives, and all those professionals from the Fintech and Insurtech industries, FINNOSUMMIT Hour continues to raise issues to talk and debate about the opportunities in the current global environment and their repercussions in Latin America.

The fifth edition held on Thursday, October 22, featured Alex Lazarow, author of the best-seller OUT-INNOVATE and Director of Investments at Cathay, who explained in a dynamic fireside chat with Andrés Fontao, Co-Founder & Managing Partner of Finnovista, what it means for startups to be global today and what are ‘camel’ startups. According to him, not all startups should follow the Silicon Valley model and highlighted what he calls “frontier innovators,” who are changing the rules of the game in the financial sector in Latin America.

According to Lazarow, “it is terribly exciting that the best startups are coming from outside Silicon Valey, such as Nubank from Brazil. We are seeing great entrepreneurs in other geographies such as Latin America,” he said. In fact, the author and international investor said that there are differences between being a disruptor and a creator, and explained that “creators are those who offer a product that is not available in the general market”, clarifying that in Latin America there are great creators behind great Fintech startups.

To put an end to this fifth edition, and as in each FINNOSUMMIT Hour, innovative Fintech startups of the region presented their solutions and evolution to the Finnovista community of innovators.

On this occasion, the chosen ones were alumni of the Batch III of the Startupbootcamp Scale FinTech Mexico City program. Eduardo Torres, CEO of ai360; Mario Gil, Founder & CEO of Bederr, and Nicolás Simonassi, Founder & CEO of Siembro presented their evolution to the FINNOSUMMIT Hour audience.
